FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
When was the present Cherokee Scout Reservation opened?
In 1968.
How many acres are there?
About 1700 acres make up the camp.
Why does it cost so much to take Basketry Merit Badge?
The Scouts are required to build a basket and a stool. Both of these kits are fairly expensive, hence the high cost.
How old do you have to be to take the Rifle or Shotgun Shooting Merit Badges?
The minimum age is 12 and Scouts must still have the strength to handle a 12-pound weapon in several positions while shooting.
Is there a fee for Rifle or Shotgun Shooting?
No. We are fortunate in that the supplies for these two Merit Badges are donated to the camp each summer.
Can swim checks be completed before camp?
We encourage Troops and Venture Crews that incorporate aquatics into their regular program to complete swim checks prior to camp. The swim checks must be performed by a certified BSA Lifeguard. In addition, these are made available at several locations around the Council prior to camp.
What Medical Form do I need to use?
Participants in the High Adventure program and adult scouters over the age of 40 must use the Class III Medical Form, which requires a physical from a practicing physician within the last 12 months. All other youth participants and adult leaders may use the Class I & II Medical Form, which only requires a physical every 3 years.
When can I get my final merit badge schedules?
These reports are distributed to unit leaders Sunday evening, after the Merit Badge sign-up.
When is provisional offered?
This is offered all 8 weeks of camp. It is limited to 30 Scouts per week. Scouts stay in Sioux Campsite. Two Adult Leaders make up the staff for these boys.
