Letter from the Chief

Dear Ordeal Candidate,

Congratulations on being tapped  as an Ordeal Candidate in Tsoiotsi Tsogalii Lodge #70.  The Order of the Arrow is perhaps the most highly regarded institution within the Boy Scouts of America.  Admittance to this institution is granted only to those honor campers who exemplify the Scout Oath and the Scout Law in their daily lives.  Your peers have found you to be worthy to wear the red arrow of our order, and we extend to you and invitation to join our brotherhood.

As an Ordeal Candidate, your greatest trial is still ahead of you.  Before you are inducted as a brother in the Order of the Arrow, you must first pass through an Ordeal.  This Ordeal will test your willingness to serve your brothers cheerfully, and without regard to your personal well-being.  Throughout this Ordeal, you will be asked to make sacrifices to help better the lives of your fellow brothers.

Within the coming year, Tsoiotsi Tsogalii Lodge #70 will be hosting three separate Ordeal weekends.  As an Ordeal Candidate, you must attend one of these ordeal weekends, and pass through the Ordeal in order to become a brother.  Each Ordeal weekends will be held at different locations. Further information about these Ordeals can be found in this booklet. We look forward to seeing each of you at your Ordeal. Once again, our congratulations and best of luck.

What to Expect

The Ordeal is a vital part of the Induction Process of the Order of the Arrow. The Ordeal provides a time for a Scout to reflect upon his experiences within Scouting.  These reflections will hopefully broaden his experiences, and reaffirming his love for Scouting.  During the Ordeal experience, a candidate is required to:

  • Maintain silence
  • Receive small amounts of food
  • Work on Camp improvement projects
  • Sleep alone and apart from other campers

The entire experience is designed to teach significant values.

Ordeal weekends are filled with many activities, all of which are safe and fully supervised in accordance with BSA Policies. There are hundreds of thousands of OA members, all of whom have participated in an Ordeal. The Ordeal experience is one that no scout will ever forget because of the honor that has been given by being inducted into the Order of the Arrow.

Registration

You next step is to choose an Ordeal Weekend and pre-register for the weekend by filling out a registration form and submitting the form with payment to the Council Office.  Register early, as space for the September and October weekends is limited to the first 150 candidates.  Registration forms are available at the Council Office, or they can be downloaded from the Lodge Website:  http://www.bsaonsc.org/OA/INDEX.HTM .  A medical form is also required for each candidate that does not require a doctor’s visit and signature.  The cost for the Ordeal Weekend is $35 (if you pre-register at least one week prior to the Ordeal weekend), and includes:  Meals, Ordeal Sash, OA Dues (for current year only), OA Handbook, Lodge Pocket Patch, and a Weekend Event Patch (if available).
